The Office of Motor Carrier Services will be closed for the following holidays. There are no travel restrictions for permitted loads over these holidays. Please plan accordingly.
Because the Office of Motor Carrier Services typically experiences heavy workload on the day following the holiday, customers are urged to submit applications for oversize permits, especially those over 156,000 pounds, several days before the permit is needed.
As of April 1, 2011, the Iowa Department of Transportation, Office of Motor Carrier Services (MCS) has discontinued the issuance of non-Iowa registration and fuel trip permits through the EZPermit website.
Please make arrangements to obtain these types of non-Iowa permits directly from that state.
MCS will continue to sell Iowa registration and fuel trip permits.
Due to staff reductions, the timeframe for processing oversize permits may be up to 4 hours. Please plan accordingly.
The Office of Motor Carrier Services no longer accepts phone calls for ordering oversize or temporary trip and fuel permits. Customers can order permits through this website or by fax at 515-237-3257.

Permits issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation are only valid for State and Federal roadways. Some permits have routing that also includes county and city roads. You must contact the individual county and/or city for separate permit(s) in order to be legal. It is your responsibility to have the appropriate county and/or city permit(s). To contact the County or City to order permit(s), you can either click here or click here.

Enforcement is having difficulty reading the information on permits the drivers have. Most of the problems are with a "reduced" size faxed permit, and re-faxing of a re-faxed permit. Please avoid re-faxing a previous re-faxed permit. Only fax an original faxed permit. If a re-faxed permit needs faxed again, contact our office and we will fax the permit.
